When we partnered with SA Harvest, we saw an opportunity to make our support for communities go even further. Surplus food that would otherwise go to waste could be redirected to help provide nutritious meals to people across South Africa.
From May 2025 to April 2026, The Star Foundation invested R3.18 million, supporting the logistics and distribution at the heart of SA Harvest’s national food rescue programme.
The goal was to provide three million meals. By the end of the partnership, that number had reached 3,587,372, almost 600,000 more than originally planned. Rescued food also reached 275 community-based organisations across the country.
Among them were Little Angels and U-turn Homeless Ministries, two organisations already supported by The Star Foundation. Their inclusion brought a closer connection to the partnership, with additional rescued food reaching feeding programmes in Hout Bay and homeless service centres in the Western Cape.
The scale of the food rescue extended beyond the meals provided. Keeping 897 tonnes of food out of landfill avoided an estimated 1,700 tonnes of CO₂e emissions and saved approximately 485 million litres of water.
What began with an ambitious target became a partnership that reached even further, with an impact felt across communities throughout South Africa.
