Reach for a Dream

This December, The Star Foundation joined forces with the 

to bring joy, hope and a touch of magic to children battling life-threatening illnesses. Together, we hosted seven Christmas -themed Dream Clubs across South Africa, which touched the lives of over 200 brave children and their families in Gauteng. Western Cape, Eastern Cape (2), KwaZulu Natal, Free State and Limpopo.

The Dream Club is one of the Foundation’s newest initiatives. Piloted in 2023 and officially launched in 2024, this unique project creates a platform for dreamers and their families to escape the confines of hospital rooms and treatments and embark on extraordinary adventures which transform ordinary days into cherished memories. The project brings together children undergoing similar treatment journeys, fostering a supportive community where they can share their experiences, celebrate victories and find hope amid their challenges.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation, renowned for its mission to give children the courage to believe in tomorrow, has been fulfilling the dreams of children in South Africa for the past 36 years. Through their work, they alleviate the immense strain that illness places on these young dreamers by providing opportunities for them to realize their greatest wishes.

Hope plays a crucial role in helping children with life-threatening illnesses. Research by the American Psychological Association shows that hopeful children have better health, stronger resilience, and a more positive outlook. This Christmas, the seven December Dream Clubs brought comfort and support, keeping hope alive for children across the country.

The Star Foundation proudly brought the Dream Club vision to life this festive season, helping make dreams come true. With a donation of R100,000 we created unforgettable experiences for young dreamers in seven cities. Each child dressed up with Dream Club Kits, collected stickers as keepsakes, and journaled about their extraordinary day, creating cherished memories.

From the Eastern Cape to Gauteng, each Dream Club was uniquely magical. In East London, children enjoyed Christmas themed arts and crafts, while in Polokwane, they learned to bake and decorate Christmas cookies. The highlight of every celebration was Santa’s grand entrance, where each child received a special Christmas gift and a photo with Father Christmas to cherish forever.

At each event, children were encouraged to embrace the Dream Club’s core values: courage, confidence, hope and family. These gatherings not only fostered lasting friendships among the children but also brought moments of relief and joy to their families.

Jumping Kids

Muhluri Leano Sbanesihle Langa, a little girl from Annadale in Polokwane is a lively toddler who is thriving with her first set of prosthetic equipment.

Muhluri was born with fibular Hemimelia, a congenital condition that results in the absence of the fibula - the most common form of long bone deficiency in the limbs. 

On 17 January 2023, she underwent a bilateral below-knee amputation and became a proud beneficiary of 

Since her amputation and the fitment of her first prostheses, Muhluri has blossomed into an active, joyful young girl. She loves running around in her prosthetic equipment, playing with her friends and exploring her world with a newfound sense of freedom and confidence.

Early intervention in cases like Muhluri’ is critical. It ensures that children living with lower limb amputation can grow, develop and play just like their able-bodied peers, embracing every moment of the precious early years of childhood. 

What are her favourite activities and why?


Muhluri enjoys playing with a ball and spending time with friends because these activities allow her to express her energy and engage in physical play. Running around is particularly fun for her, as it gives her a sense of freedom and excitement.


What would you like her to do as a career one day? Any ideas yet?


While Muhluri is still young, her love for physical activity and athleticism suggests a potential career path in sports. She could explore various options within the field, such as becoming a professional athlete, a sports coach, or a physical therapist.


What types of sport &/or other extracurricular activities would you like her to be involved in?


Track and field events, such as sprinting, long jump, and javelin throw, would be ideal for Muhluri. These activities align with her interests and can help her develop her physical abilities and coordination. Additionally, other sports like swimming or basketball could also be considered, as they offer opportunities for physical fitness and social interaction.

What do you hope for her try or achieve with her prosthetic equipment?


The primary goal is for Muhluri to gain the ability to walk and run independently. This would significantly enhance her mobility and quality of life, allowing her to participate in various activities without limitations.

What is your message to other parents of children living with a physical challenge?


There is hope and support available for families facing physical challenges. By conducting thorough research and seeking assistance from organizations like Jumping Kids, parents can ensure that their children have access to the necessary resources and opportunities to thrive. It is important to remember that a physical challenge should not hinder a child's potential for a bright future.

1 year old Dané was born with a missing lower limb on her right side – a congenital condition that developed in the womb. Since being fitted with her first prosthetic limb, Dané is thriving and hitting all the milestones of a toddler. From overcoming early developmental challenges to progressing at the same level as her peers, this little girl is mastering the art of being a toddler, one step at a time.

Assisting children born with physical challenges as early as possible helps them adapt seamlessly to their prosthetic equipment. This means they can focus on what truly matters – embracing all the fun, joy and wonder of childhood with confidence and ease.

It’s essential for little Dané to remain part of the Jumping Kids initiative, ensuring her prosthesis is regularly updated and maintained as she grows. This ongoing support is crucial for her development.

What are Dane’s favourite activities to participate in as a toddler?

Playing outdoors and swimming. She likes playing with other kids.

What would you like her to become one day? In other words, what is your wish for her future?

Our wish for her is to be successful and to do whatever makes her happy.

What types of sport &/or extracurricular activities do you wish for her to get involved with in the future?

Athletics, swimming, netball, drama and dance.

What do you hope that she can try or achieve with her prosthetic equipment?

We hope that she will inspire others and that she will be trying things that other people think will be impossible.

What is your message to other parents with children living with a physical challenge?

Never give up and always be the biggest supporter. God is always with you and will never disappoint anyone.
