The Character Company

LottoStar presents the “Big September” competition with Joburg’s favourite radio station, 947, from the 5th to the 30th of September 2022. In the 3 weeks of the competition, we will be raising funds for The Character Company.

The Character Company is an NGO that mentors young boys from households headed by single mothers and who are in need of a father figure in their lives. The organisation offers various mentorship programs that provide guidance and support for our youth.

The Character Company comprises a group of men and women from all walks of life with a common goal of addressing the impact of absent fathers in families and society at large. They work together to raise boys to be good men in their communities.

The organisation believes in its five core values which are courage, kindness, self-discipline, honesty and respect.

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, “A father's absence affects children in numerous unfortunate ways. While a father’s presence makes a positive difference in the lives of both children and mothers.”

South Africa has a high rate of divorce and of fathers who opt to not be part of their children’s lives which contributes to the majority of households headed by single mothers. Each parent has a responsibility and a significant role to play in ensuring that their child(ren) are raised and nurtured in a way that their holistic psychological needs are fulfilled. Therefore, the vision and mission of the organisation is to raise boys to be good men who will positively impact families, communities and society at large. 

The Character Company primarily works with young boys between the ages of 5 & 10, however the long-term plan is to be part of their lives throughout their school careers and beyond. The boys have weekly and weekend activities and sometimes their families come with them. They have camps throughout the year and a support structure is provided for single mothers. Most importantly, the organisation advocates for the better treatment of women and children. 

LottoStar’s “Big September” competition with 947 aims to raise funds for the organisation, to contribute towards the mentorship camps for both the mentor and the young boys.
